Juneau Public Libraries is planning on doing “Gathering Moss: a Natural and Cultural History of Mosses” by Robin Waller Kimmerer for Tradition. For one thing, we grow moss in abundance up here in the temperate rainforest! Beyond that, it was very important to me to do a book that includes indigenous ways of knowing in our science book club. Juneau has a large indigenous population, primarily Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian, and our community is working hard to revitalize the languages and cultures. That means we should integrate indigenous ways of knowing with Western ways of knowing when we discuss science.
I was happy to see Eagle Blue made the list, but prioritized picking a book by a Native author.
