We held our discussion of Transformation on 10/3 and our discussion of Tradition last night, 11/2.
Transformation: 12 attendees
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind was our selected book and I also showed a TEDtalk from William Kamkwamba for those who hadn’t read the book or needed a refresher. We had a great discussion about personal transformation and personal drive to become educated and then we watched the video and discussed transforming communities.
Tradition: 12 attendees
Station Eleven was our selected book and I showed a 2 minute interview with the author. Most people in the room had read the book beforehand, which doesn’t always happen, and so we talked about that for quite a while. The discussion questions provided really drove our discussion and everyone was eager to share something they’d picked up in the book! Many people shared they didn’t think they’d like it until they “got into it” and were glad we’d selected it because it wasn’t something they’d pick up on their own. The attendees didn’t connect as much with football, so we didn’t force conversation. The science partner was great during this part and was able to grab parts of the discussion questions and relate them to other more relevant themes of tradition for our attendees. Instead of talking about athletes, we had a conversation about people with disabilities who are learning skills (gaining muscle memory) that we take for granted.
