We started with Tradition and read Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. We had 17 participants and many said they would never have read this book if it was not a part of this program. Our science partner was great. He knew a lot about the flu and vaccinations and we talked about those items and also what traditions would be important in our life or community to continue with after a disaster.
We ended with Transformation and read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. We had 14 participants. We showed the author, William Kamkwamba’s, TEDtalk and talked about his transformation along with his family’s and community’s transformation. We talked about hunger in Malawi and in our own community and astonished many by the scary statistics. We tied Station Eleven together with this book by discussing the beginnings of science whether it’s in a destroyed nation or an impoverished country.
