I have found that people are hesitant to participate in anything too formal sounding. In my community people enjoy lively discussion/ debates all the time even in regards to loose science concepts however the second you say hey why don’t you come to the library to join our group they disappear. I would credit this more to peoples lack of confidence. In many small towns the formal education level isn’t real high which makes people feel as though they don’t have much to contribute. What these people aren’t realizing is that they offer a ton, and many are so well read. My community can be very cliquey at times as well. It’s a challenge to include people from all groups and ages when they are so hesitant about venturing out of their comfort zone socially.
